Amber - thanks so much for visiting. Your comments from the perspective of a business student are very interesting. I have the impression that this movement is very much on point with the younger generation, and it is a little surprising that b-schools aren't embracing this more.

Your words are very encouraging- "a multitude of students who believe there is a greater purpose for the work that you do" - The world is waiting!

I think that internet will be the major cause of the en d of capitalism because knowledge is something accessible for anybody for free. And when we live in a world where knowledge is the fundamental base of all things except nature, you can make powerfull decision about where you take your ressource for living.

I'm convinced that we will live in a world without economic matter, we will live in a world of free ressource accessibility. A dream of technocracy

What is the purpose of business? - As a current undergrad International Business/Entrepreneurship student, I can tell you that professors STILL tell us that it is to maximize shareholder value! Yes, we are now required to take "Business Ethics" and there's a new elective course they are introducing on "sustainability" and there's a very active student organization called Students for Responsible Business...but we are still taught that profit is the ultimate bottom-line.

Well there is another movement on the rise - one that beleives that while the "Triple-bottom-line" is a good beginning toward positive change, it is still not enough...one that believes that the real bottom line of business is to ultimately serve and glorify God. And while I doubt there will be any course offered anytime soon on the subject of spirituality and the workplace, I am one of a multitude of students, young entrepreneurs, and the next workforce generation that believes there is a greater purpose for what we do and that business has more potential for impact than anyone can imagine.

Change is happening - just maybe in a way that many people aren't even considering. Not just sustainable change in the material sense, but also in the spiritual. Imagine that...

I was a freshman in college for the first big wave -- Earth Day 1970. The second big wave came in the 1988-1991 period, where the terms "corporate environmentalism" and "sustainable business" first entered the conversation.

We're in another wave, but this one seems different to me -- one marked by the controversy over global warming and the scientific review process; the social/political ends behind cap and trade legislation; how some companies have used sustainability to divert attention from other issues, to mention just a few differences. It's not clear yet where this wave will end (or if it will end).

So fascinating. I love this changing face of business. But I have been known as one of those bleeding heart-gullible types. I love your perspective, Bradley--can always hear your wisdom and experience in this area that I know little of. Like how you pointed out in my last book club post that businesses giving back is the new face of entrepreneurship. Who would have thought? Guess that's why I'm in the social sciences. :)

Interesting, Brad, really interesting. It's certainly a movement that is gaining momentum.

Do you think there is any sense in it? What's your personal opinion? Are you changing your job title to Senior VP of Sustainability?

I'm looking forward to the future... Let's see what it brings.
